Dealing With Aging

Posted by: jude   in Senior Health

When I was young I thought it was gross for old people to be sexually active I simply couldn’t comprehend that idea. I thought that physical contact was reserved for young people with supple youthful bodies not our parents or grandparents, how naive. One would think that it would at least slow down and maybe it does when you  get really ancient, but from studies being done and the use of enhancers to stimulate the libido maybe it never will.

Testosterone and estrogen are the two most important hormones for men and women. Everyone knows that women go through menopause at a certain age, but men also experience a similar process that is called andropause and just like women they can experience mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue, and infertility. Other symptoms that will occur for some are erectile dysfunction, loss of interest in sex, depression, and anxiety, just to name a few. Read more about andropause. (will open in a new window)

We old people have so much to look forward to don’t we? Just as some women do estrogen replacement, there is also testosterone replacement for men and it will help relieve your symptoms, but wont cure them. Make sure you have test done to determine your testosterone levels and you see a qualified doctor because you can develop side effects from too much testosterone, like heart disease and enlarged prostate glands.

I, myself decided not to do estrogen replacement, but many women have because it does help reduce our risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. Some women have reported experiencing blood clotting and also uterus and or breast cancer. Many women are trying more natural remedies like black cohosh and soy products, but there are others that can be considered.

I personally don’t mind the aging process so long as I don’t lose the ability to stay mobile and not dependant on anyone to take care of me. The only thing I think I will dread is if I ever have to wear depends, now that is an ungodly thought. My niece worked in a nursing home in Chattanooga and some of the stories she related to me was heartbreaking. I do not want to  live out my days in an old folks home.

Both male and female are advised to relax, rest well, exercise, eat the right kinds of food, and abstain from drinking and smoking. That’s the key for everyone though isn’t it?

Like you, I am Senior not Sedated or Sedentary or Sleeping (right now). As to your post, for 20 years I have conducted annual staff training on aging and sexuality given to my nursing home employees. It can be summarized in the statement: “Birds do it; Bees do it; Old People do it. Just not as fast or as often.”

I am 50 years young. When I was young I used to think that 40 was old. But age is just a frame of mind. and what our bodies let us do. lol

Hi Carol,
Thanks for stopping by. I sometimes forget I’m getting older until I look in the mirror that’s why I only wear my glasses when I’m working and not viewing mirrors that way my wrinkles are blurred.

By the standards I had at age 18, I am an old fogy. At 60 years and about to slide to 61 in a few days, my attitude has changed considerably. LOL!

I, too, decided against estrogen replacement. Sometimes I think that science needs to catch up with God and the natural order of things. While I am not as active as I would like to be, I can still handle most things. Oh to be young again with a better attitude about seniors.

Thanks for this post on aging gracefully.

Hi Jaz,
You sound wonderful and it is so strange the attitudes we develop when we are young and how quickly they change when we realize we we are our parents after all. Thanks for your comment.

I’m almost 53 and I didn’t go with estrogen replacement and I went through surgical menopause at 27. I went through 2 menopauses’, one surgical and one regular, the second was worse than the first (maybe I was just too busy raising two children to notice that one).
I love my maturity, I do and say and go anywhere at anytime, nothing is holding me back! I really do believe the saying “You’re as old as you feel”.
