Saturday Morning Weirdness

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

I went to bed early last night and Sadie just woke me up to go outside it’s 3 in the morning now and I was sitting on the balcony and all of a sudden I saw 1 little firefly (Lampyrida) flying all over the place and it took me back to childhood and how cruel we were by catching them and removing the light and making earrings, rings, and necklaces out of them or catching a bunch of them and putting them in a jar.

At the time I didn’t know I was being mean and cruel and that I was killing them, but now it makes me sad and we played with  June Bugs or beetles by catching them and tying strings around one leg and making them fly and buzz until they lost their poor little legs. No one explained to me how cruel that was at the time so it was one of our favorite past times.

I felt so bad that I had tortured and maimed these insects and I didn’t even know their proper names so I looked them up and read all about them at wikipedia. I read a lot of very interesting information about those poor little insects that kids love to catch and torture. I remember my son doing the very same thing as I did and I also remember that I didn’t explain to him that they had a right to live.

I realized sitting out there watching that 1 little firefly that we do many things in our life that we never even give a second thought to or at least I haven’t until lately. Now some of the weirdest stuff pops into my head that I never even wondered about and I immediately have to go look it up to find out more about it. It makes me wonder why I wasn’t more curious when I was younger. I always took things at face value and didn’t dig deeper. I’m going back to bed, I’m getting weird.
