Every year in June the National street rodders meet in York and that always gives our economy a big boost. There had been talk of them not coming to town this year because of the rising gas prices, but that didn’t deter them. Everywhere you turned you could see these old brilliantly colored vehicles all over the place. Bill read that 3,000 were suppose to be here, but I’m not sure of the actual count.
I was so afraid I would hit one with my scooter because many seem to be under the assumption that they own the town when they are here and that they have the right of way to everything. Many of the older people stay off the streets when they are in town because there is so much extra traffic. They come from all over and our town is really colorful during this time.
They normally have a big parade and people line up to watch them go by, but with the heat advisory I’m not sure if they had the turn out that was expected. It was miserable this weekend and yesterday morning Bill and I left the house around 8:30, him on the Harley and I was on the scooter. That was my first ride on the main streets and I was a little nervous.
We rode all over the place and I ended up putting 26 miles on my scooter and my face is a bright red today and it hurts. The ride gave me more confidence to ride on the roads with other vehicles and that’s a good thing. After we took the scooter home, I doubled up with Bill and we headed to Gettysburg to the swap meet and then doubled back to Lancaster.
Six and a half hours out in the heat is not good for older people and I was exhausted when we finally got home so needless to say I didn’t even turn on the computer last night. All the street rods are gone now and the city of York has returned to normal until the next big event hits the York Fairgrounds. There is always something going on, Clubs like to book their events in York for some reason.
I always loved when we had the motorcycle races, but they stopped those a few years back because they were having so much trouble with the Pagans motorcycle gang causing trouble. It simply wasn’t worth all the crap that people had to put up with and it didn’t seem to matter to them that security was all over the place. They still did whatever they pleased, what a shame.
