Bill told me a story about how he wanted a guitar when he was young and no one ever got him one. It made me feel very sorry for him so a couple years ago I went down to the pawn shop and bought him one for 125 dollars and then took it to the music store to get new strings and have it tuned. When I gave it to him he was very touched. We bought a child’s guitar for Nate at Christmas and he and Pappy had a ball Pickin and a Grinnin.
He was trying to teach himself the chords so I downloaded everything I could find. He played with it for the longest till I suggested he should go take some lessons, now what’s wrong with that suggestion? Maybe he thought I was telling him how bad he was at any rate he stopped trying to learn. I can’t figure these men out or how they think. I was even going to pay for the lessons. I told him that him and Nate could go together, one 6 the other 60, now how cool is that?
He also told me about a pair of cowboy boots he had wanted when he was a little boy and cut out the picture and gave it to his MOM and she said she would order them for him. They were black with turquoise and purple with white up the middle and everyday he would go to the post office and ask the Postmistress if his boots had come yet. They lived in a small town in VA. so of course she knew little Billy and she would say no, sorry not yet.
His poor old Mom didn’t have much money and God love her she didn’t want to disappoint him so she gave him hope, but thought he would forget about it in time, but he didn’t. Every single day he went to the Post Office with hope in his little face and everyday the little guy was disappointed, but for a whole year he held on to that hope never wavering until he started liking girls.
He still remembers those boots and still likes to tell the story and he is so good at relating a story that no matter how many times I hear the story I still laugh or feel the pain that a small child would have felt. If I ever find any of those damn cowboy boots the way he described them I swear I’ll buy them even if he never wears them he can have the friggin things bronzed even though it wouldn’t be quite the same, he would at least know I adore him.
