The York Fair Is Almost Here

Posted by: jude   in Home and Family

Our York Fair starts this week and our area will be crazy because we live about 2 blocks from the fair ground. Normally Bill and I go over at least once just to remember the smells and the excitement of when we were young. We also like to eat the junk food. We like to eat at the stands from our area though because for some reason they just seem cleaner even though I know they all have to be inspected.

We have to have a parking permit in our area which is great because we know we will always have our parking space even though we could park in back where the garage is. At least in our neighborhood a bunch of stray cars will not be allowed. Many people take their vacation during this time especially if they have large yards so they can get the fair parking overflow.

They don’t seem to care if the yard gets messed up so long as they get their share of the money. A friend of mine always does this and she really makes a killing because she’s so close to the fair and she does watch the vehicles and does charge less than many and definitely less than it cost by parking in that mess at the fairgrounds and with the lineup of entertainers this year I’m sure she’ll do great again.

The York Fair is touted to be America’s first and oldest fair which you can read all about at the site above if you click on the our history link. It’s actually a very interesting read if you like history. The prices for entry are Adults: $6.00, Children (6-11): $3.00,Children 5 and under: Free, Parking: $6.00 Usually they have some admission special days which is cool because if your a senior or you have lots of kids that can cost a fortune.

I LOVE county fairs. I have since I was a kid. Now, I have kids of my own and always try to take them to as many fairs as I can.

My wife and I work in politics, so we also try to get as many candidates as possible to go chat with voters at county fairs. It is a great way for us to mix work and fun, and more importantly, I want to support candidates that feel comfortable standing in a barn next to a 4-Hers prize sheep talking about what is right with America and what can be done to make our country better.

Oh, how I loved the NY State Fair! The last time I was there in 2003, my son and I took that helicopter ride – the first time for both of us in a chopper. We’d tour the horse barns, the buildings of exhibits, eat everything that smelled good, and ride the rides when we digested (tough lesson learned from years past, ahem). I have yet to see another that compares to the NY State Fair.

I haven’t been to a Fair in years, but my fond memories of them will definitely last forever! :-) I’m starting to miss the corn dogs right about now…
