Are You A Good Tipper?

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

I’ve worked in restaurants since I was 19 and regardless of where I moved I could always find a job either as a waitress, hostess, bartender, prep cook, or cook. Over the years I have done them all and that’s why my back and feet bother me so much now. I always liked being around people until I hit menopause then they (people) really started to work on my nerves, not good if you rely on gratuities or tips or tokes in Nevada.

Tip actually stands for To Insure Promptness so I could never understand why people didn’t give the tip before hand to make sure that they received excellent service. Well, of course I knew why and it’s because most people don’t know how to tip and the majority are very stingy so if they tipped before hand they might never get served (joke). If you have a steady clientele then you learn quick where your money is coming from and you cater more to them.

Of course you want to give everyone good service if you take pride in what you do and I was a very good waitress, I always pat myself on the back because I was a professional when it came to my job. I learned over the years that it was the female that actually determines how big your tip is going to be unless it was someone dating then the guys were always trying to impress their date so I always got a bigger tip with new daters.

People that work in the business are usually better tippers because they know what it’s like. I also learned that you shouldn’t judge by how they are dressed either because some of the poorest looking people left better tips than those that looked rich. Young people always proved to be better tippers than older people and that was true also when I cut hair. I always felt that restaurants should pay better wages so people didn’t feel obliged to tip.

When I worked in Nevada I found that the Canadians by far were the cheapest tippers I have ever run across. Sorry to all you nice Canadians, but it’s true. I loved working in Nevada because I loved to gamble back then, that is one habit that I kicked after it got the better of me, but it took years to accomplish that because I had the fever as we always called it. It’s so cool when you’re on a winning streak, but they are very few and far between.

Okay, that’s enough information from me for today.

We give 15% tips usually, unless it’s a buffet which in that case we give 10%. My husband always lets me decide on the tip. We used to add it on the credit card, but I read on someone’s blog (can’t remember now whose it was) that when people do it that way, it doesn’t all get to the server so now we bring along some cash for the tip.

I know I would make a horrible waitress and probably would only last a couple hours before they’d want to boot me out. Interesting that younger people leave bigger tips. That surprises me.

My big gambling is the office football pool which I think I have won 3 times in 3 years and the March Madness basketball pool which I never won yet.

I just like playing games for the fun of it, but found that when I participate in the office pools, it makes the games much more fun to watch.

I tip 25% of the bill unless the server was rude. If she/he was rude they get 15%. I’ve tipped as high as 50% on a meal and 100% on beverages served with a smile and a bit of conversation. At bars I tip 1$ a drink (sodas and waters too) if the drink prices average out to 5$ each then I’ve tipped %25.

I’m a good tipper but that’s cuz I’ve been spent time waitressing and know what it’s like.

Karen,
The majority of people are conservative tippers, but these days wait staff have a hard time making a living, but at least you tip many people do not and they are usually the ones that take up all your time and are very demanding and the rudest.

I agree that it makes for more fun to watch some sports when you have something riding on them.

Hi Jamie Sue,
We love tippers like you, but sadly depending where you work people that tip like you are very scarce.

Hi Laura,
People that know how stressful and difficult a job it is and have worked in the business are always better tippers.

i can relate this when i used to be a supervisor in a certain restaurant here. it gives us (though im not included to share tip our policy) more energy to serve better when they received huge.it would only not help to a better service but i would save us from the daily fare.:) thats why if would be in any restaurant i’ll share my tip.:)

I know one woman, Betty, who has been waiting tables for sixteen years. She is only in her mid-forties. However, because she is on her feet all day, she now needs knee surgery. She has bone spurs in her feet as well.

That’s so sad.

I’m a mover. Some people will tip me 100 dollars per day, and some will tip a big fat “0″ after days and many miles.

Why do you think that is ???

My wife and I dine out often and I enjoy great service. The good news is most of the service we recieve is excellent. I like to over tip, if that is possible, leaving close to 30% if i really enjoyed the experience. But will not hesitate to leave a lot lower amount for very poor service (though seldom less that 15%)…

peace,

My name is nicole and i live in mass, Ive been a server for 9 years ! My first job i was 15. so its fair to say ive got a good grip on the ” bizz “. I have friends that ive seen leavin awful tips to good servers and what i tell them is ….How would you feel if you worked a 40 hour week at your job and only got paid for 30 hours ?? thats how we feel when we ( servers ) give you great service and get less then we deserve. Thankfully most people tip well…which is why at 24 im successfuly raising a 4 year old and i just bought my first house out in the country ! see…20 % goes a long way !
