Is Our Economy Collapsing?

Posted by: jude   in Home and Family

Are we headed for a depression which could last for years or is this just an economic recession which would be normal in business and usually lasts a few months? I try to understand these things, but they aren’t always clear for me. Are we headed for a collapse? Depending on who you read and the sources it’s enough to make people panic.

They tell us this is a good time to buy a home ( a buyers market ), but it certainly isn’t a good time to sell. People are losing their jobs and if you read the paper you will see lists and lists of foreclosures and sheriff sales. When we are out riding I see so many businesses that have closed and it’s scary.

Where do all of these ex employees go for jobs, how do they live when they can’t afford to pay mortgages and buy food? Unemployment only lasts for so long. Many Americans are being forced to live in their cars or at the mercy of family members, soup kitchens are being bombarded by hungry people.

I have seen enough homeless people regardless of the economic times, but lately it appears to have doubled and even tripled in some areas. I have my doubts about both parties, Democrats and Republicans on whether either side can help our failing economy or how long their plans might take, but each individual must make a choice soon and I hope we choose correctly.

People that have been investing for years for their retirement in “safe” companies are starting to see their retirement funds go down the drain. This just goes to show that nothing in life is a sure bet. For years they have been saying that the social security system may be going down the toilet also and it may not be there when it’s your time to retire, what happens then?

Now is not the time to spend frivolously, most people are finding ways to stretch the dollar which isn’t worth much now. I really feel bad for families because I know how hard it is to make ends meet. I know one lady that maxed out her credit cards to pay for her children’s tuition at college and they even own a business that I worked at some years ago.

At least she used her credit for an education so her children could earn a living, but most people know they will eventually have to pay these credit cards off, but they don’t even think about what it’s going to cost them in the long run they simply think about the here and now and their spending power, we live in a world of instant gratification, we want it now.

I confess I am worried about the world that my Grandchildren are facing and that’s where I shall leave this post.

Me too. Although I don’t have any grandchildren yet, I worry about them and myself in these perilous times.

I feel bad for people who lose their homes and their jobs–it is very scary! I’m thankful that both Gerard and I have had a steady job so far, even though I wish we could retire.

I don’t know what the answer is for our country’s ecnomic situation and not sure anyone really does. I certainly seems as though we are heading for a recession. I just hope it doesn’t get any worse than that.

I tend to think we are headed for a major depression… I don’t think this is the little blip on the radar that the economists want us to believe. I read today that most economist say we will be out of this by next year! HA!

I am American living in Africa, and I can assure you it’s not just the USA that is facing an economic crisis right now. On the one hand it’s really cool that the world is so interconnected now. On the other hand, that means when one falls, we all fall. Rising food prices will means millions more people starving to death around the world this year. From my view on the world, it looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

BUT! I have a whole lot of faith in humanity. There are armies of people out there making good things happen at the same time as this collapse is grabbing our attention. In the end, we will still have each other, and while many will suffer I do believe humanity will prevail.

Congrats on a lovely post.

I don’t understand the complexities of today’s economic environment, so I don’t know what is going to happen. But like you, I worry about my grandchildren’s future.

I’m in the UK and as Christina said, this is a world wide issue, I find it hard to believe those that say its a ‘blip’ and believe that although we may hit rock bottom in the next year, it will take many years for us to climb back up and maybe a decade before we get back to where we was a year or so ago.

I do agree with your point about it being a buyers market, but only for buyers that have cash as getting a mortgage (in the UK atleast) is getting harder each and every day.

I think if you have the cash to invest long term, putting it into buying property is one of the safer options, prices will rise at some point, maybe many years time but they will rise again, whereas putting it into a bank savings account at the moment can be worrying.

I’m afraid a severe recession, if not a depression, is upon us. My concern is how our government makes it worse in the name of trying to help.

History shows how much government played into the great depression’s severity and duration. I say tell government to back off and let the fall happen now. It’ll be more productive for our country’s economy in the long run than continuing to apply bandaids that will not be of any real help.

God bless us all.

I also don’t completely understand how things got to this point with our economy, but I also really empathize with those that are going to suffer losing their jobs and homes because of it. My DH lost his job during the “Dot Com Bust” a few years back and it was really hard to keep from falling into debt and hard to make the sacrifices to save money. We did it and survived, but it’s something I hope we never have to go through again. Luckily now DH has a job that is more secure, but these days is ANY job really secure? I don’t think so. It’s not like the old days, is it? :-(

I don’t know about the economy either. I hear all the horror stories but around me things really seem okay.. I just bought a car, my friend just bought a car. I work for the government though and so my job is good and fairly stable (knock on wood).

So I haven’t really seen anything bad, or felt it yet, but it still all worries me.

Yes its a scary time all over the world and it definitely is a time we need to pull in our belts. I wrote a similar post on my blog and I am trying to encourage bloggers to identify ways to save money or live a bit more frugally and share how to make it throught the difficult times. Great post!

In regards to the debate last night, I thought it was boring. I did not learn anything new about either candidate.

I wish they would change the format and let the two talk directly to each other, rather than letting the moderator control everything.
