I have not had to endure that heartache, but have had to deal with pets that have lived their life to the fullest. Our last one was 15 when we finally decided we were keeping her with us for selfish reasons and sent her to the Rainbow Bridge. Our vet told us we would know it was time when we looked at her not enjoying life like she used to. Condolences and hope Shadow recovers. I am truly sorry for your lost son. I'm glad at least there's a bright side, and that taking care of him is helping distract you from the pain of your loss.
