I used to get those emails at work with stories like that that are supposed to make you panic, stop shopping somewhere, or stop buying something. I would immediately go to snopes.com and look it up. They were almost always Internet urban legends. I'd even email the people back with the link proving that it was made up, but some people still refused to believe me. They'd rather get everyone in an uproar over something (I remember how everyone wanted to boycott Pepsi because they got an email saying they removed the US flag from their cans after 9-11) than just sit and think a minute about whether what they're reading is true or not.

Well said! Personally, I love the Internet. I could not live without. When I emigrated to Asia many years ago it was many only source of 'real' information. There are no English language libraries around and the odd bookshop sells only romans that tourists brought along. Nice to read though as they are, they are not exactly a greatr source of information.
Anything I wanted to know, learn or discover, I checked on the Internet. In many cases this means checking out several sources before you get an answer. I am a great fan of Google (also use Google scolar to find real information) and Wikipedia.

Suzanne’s last blog post..Join the world’s largest biological experiment.

I always check with Snopes.com. Especially on all those e-mails that travel around the web about missing kids and atm safety tips. My MIL now sends me any "warning" e-mail she receives to check out for her before she forwards them.

I am a firm believer in checking things out first, whether on snopes.com or other ways, for the simple reason that there are so many questionable letters, posts and emails floating around out there.
