I'm Not An Avid Sports Fan Anymore

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

There was a time that I never missed a Redskin game or a Nascar race. I’ve never been to a professional game, but I’ve been to quite a few Nascar races and always had so much fun. Lots of people can’t stand all the noise, but I found it very exciting. Over the years I’ve managed to collect a lot of memorabilia and one of these days I’ll either sell it or give it to Ethan. We were at the flea market last week and I found two packs of cards, one of Davey Allison and the other was Allen Kulwicki so of course I had to buy them.

When I was young we went to lots of local stock car races and back then it was fun to see all the crashes, but of course we didn’t want anything to happen to the drivers. Nascar has become one of the biggest money makers around and I followed it even after Bobby retired and Davey was killed. I think after Earnhardt died was when I started losing interest in watching it, not that I really liked Earnhardt, but he made it more exciting to watch and I always had a running bet against him.

The Nascar teams today are well prepared for any car emergencies and always have many types of automotive performance parts on hand because of all the screwy things that happen on the track. I have seen many cars that they’ve managed to put back together at least enough to finish the race, of course not the ones that are totalled. I have seen some of the worst wrecks with the cars flipping over and over and the drivers get out and walk away and that’s totally amazing, thank God for all the required safety features.

I once saw Davey Allison at the Poconos keep going over and over and over and I just knew he was either dead or mangled. However he got out and waved, wow, what a relief. He was my favorite after his Father Bobby. After Davey died I decided I’d cheer Joe Gibbs team along, but was disappointed that Jarret left the team so I looked for someone else to back and ended up standing behind Jeff Gordon and even though I’m not an avid fan I still root for him whenever I watch.

I guess it depends more now on what my partner is interested in and that happens to be motorcycles and that’s what we spend most of our spare time doing, riding and going to any event that pertains to motorcycles. At least now I can participate instead of just watch. We use to have motorcycle races here every year until the Pagans started causing so much trouble then they cancelled them, I think they had races last year, but it wasn’t the same.
