Shadow refuses to even try and walk, at first Bill made him a wooden thing with the swivel wheels, but it was too high so we worked on a cart for him and all he wants to do is lay down. At first we had it like a regular cart, but then used wood to add 2 swivel rollers in front so he couldn’t lay down. He still refuses even when I hold out a treat so now I’m thinking it might be too narrow so we are going to move the front wheels back so he wont feel trapped and shorten it.

This is getting very frustrating because someone has to sleep downstairs with him otherwise he’d bark and whine all night. I can’t put the muzzle on him for long periods of time so we go in shifts. I go to bed and then when Bill comes up I go down and sleep in the recliner next to Shadow. We are also going through those piddle pads like crazy. We were getting all of our dog supplies at the pet store, but found a cheaper place for the piddle pads.

We now buy the dollar store brand because we can get 18 for 5 bucks and we buy them all out as soon as they come in. I tried toddler training pants at first and then I bought expensive special doggy diapers and neither work well for Shadow. I even tried diapering him up with the piddle pads and safety pins, but that didn’t work either. I was thinking about trying some of those depends on him, but I’m sure the clerk will think they’re for me. Oh, well who cares I might need them someday myself although I certainly hope not.

I keep hoping he will just get up and walk, but the longer he lays there the weaker in the backside he seems to get, although he does turn him self around with his front paws. I’m seriously wondering if it might be a mental thing after his fall because for 2 days he did walk some and even went outside to do his business, but that was it and he hasn’t tried since. I wonder if the dog whisperer would make a house call, probably not besides I wouldn’t be able to afford him.

I think next week we are going to take him to a different vet because I have no clue if the one I’ve used for years even knows anything besides how to give shots. I know I should have taken out pet insurance years ago for an emergency like this, but I certainly wasn’t anticipating something this drastic. If anyone knows of anyone that has a real dog wheelchair for a medium sized dog that isn’t in use anymore I would certainly consider buying it at a reasonable price because I can’t afford a new one.

God bless you, and I am going to pray everyday that Shadow will once again want to try to walk.

It’s a worry. Whether it’s mental or physical. And Shadow is getting LOTS of attention! What more can you do?

I’m praying Shadow will start walking again, or at least try. It’s not an easy situation for any of you.

Has anyone suggested water therapy?

I feel your pain, really I do. I’m having very similar issues with an aging dog. Mine still gets around some but not well, we have to help him by wrapping a towel around his rear end. He’s just recently started the incontinence and that is driving me crazy. I may have to try those puppy pads, my floors can’t take much more. I hope Shadow gets better soon.

So Sorry to hear about your doggie. I know it must be hard to watch someone you love so much be suffering. Hugs to you!

Aw, sad for you and your doggie. I admire you for trying so hard to make him comfortable and help him. We seem to go all out when it comes to our pets, don’t we?

I really feel for you. Puff is almost 11 and has arthritis really bad in his front right leg as well as his hips. I have him on meds but he’s so independent that he won’t let anyone pick him up to carry him upstairs. And since he sleeps with me he has trouble getting on the bed. I 1st took the “feet” off of my bed frame. He still had trouble getting on the bed. I finally took the frame off the bed completely and have nothing but bricks on all 4 corners to keep it from being totally on the floor. He can get up now but I’m not sure for how long. It’s amazing what we do for our loving “children.” And that’s exactly what they are and have been from the day we get them. I love Puff as much as I do my 3 grown kids. I’ll say a prayer for you and Shadow.

When it gets warmer, if you have a pool or know someone who does, you may try him in that. It’s supposed to be good for dogs with leg or back injuries because it allows them to work their legs without all the strain. Theoretically, since your dog is small, you could fill the tub up and try it. Be careful though. Just because they’re dogs doesn’t mean they know how to dog paddle. The first time I put Bella in my mom’s pool, she started sinking. I had to play Baywatch and grab her before she drowned.

Martha–My two dogs have both had surgery involving their legs. One of them tore her ACL when she stepped wrong off the doggy steps I have in front of my bed. I’ve actually considered doing what you’re doing or buy a platform bed so they won’t hurt themselves again.

Thank-you all so much for your comments. I had him in the tub last night because I’m afraid he will get an infection so I wanted to clean him good, but he did nothing. We are taking him to the Vet today for an x-ray and he hasn’t peed since yesterday so he’s either being stuborn or he’s blocked. Again thanks so much for the support and concern, they are our babies.
