We had to run to Lowe’s the other day and every time we go over I’m reminded of how grateful I am that I’m not working there any more. They have more rules and regulations than the Army and cameras located every where and someone watching your every move. You have to take tests on everything that happens in the store on the computer. I couldn’t believe all the stuff they expected a cashier to know, they want you to know about every department so you’re able to fill in if someone doesn’t show up, I didn’t want to know everything and a lot of things I didn’t like.

I hated climbing up on that stupid high ladder to get light bulbs down and restock, I hate heights and with my bad hip they’re lucky I didn’t fall. I did like using the handheld barcode scanners at Lowe’s though, but I found out quick that you better watch the register while your doing it. It might have stuck on one wrong code and not registered anything else then you have to go through the whole process again, which happened a couple of times to me. It certainly made adding up all those heavy supplies easy without lifting a lot of the heavy crap to the register.

Of course you were suppose to move everything anyhow and check between and under everything and even open boxes and look inside because of theft and sometimes it got awkward because I certainly didn’t want to make customers feel like a thief. We had to do it because cameras were watching our every move and they always used footage at our monthly meetings. I always told them it was a new company rule when they got ticked at me. I was always amazed at the amount of theft and those that got caught and how devious they were with cameras everywhere.

When this particular store opened they were so strict it felt like I was working for the Gestapo and everyone was suspect. The cashiers actually were tested on carts of supplies and finding all the hidden stuff between boxes or in boxes and different ways people would try to slip things past. I actually wanted to work in shipping and receiving, but they decided I’d make a better cashier. There was a heck of a lot of crap to learn just to be a frickin cashier and they also expected you to learn where everything in the store was, they are big stores.

The handheld barcode scanners didn’t always deactivate those little magnets though when you tapped it so the alarms at the door were always going off. “Beep beep beep beep” until someone deactivated the door and grabbed the person and drug them back to a register to deactivate magnets and look at their receipt, what a pain. If we suspected someone of theft we weren’t suppose to stop them ourselves of course which I wouldn’t have anyhow because I’m a wuss, I’m not a hero and I would have also given them every penny in the register without a fight.

You weren’t suppose to wait on family members because they were afraid you weren’t honest and would give them stuff. They said in the past that had happened a lot so it was policy now. You have to call a manager to approve everything from cashing a check to approving a Military discount and that really ticks people off. We had to ask people for their phone number which I hated doing because people got ignorant half the time and it wasn’t my fault if they want to bitch then bitch to management not me.

Okay enough of my tirade about Lowe’s, I’m just glad I no longer work there, I quit because of the creepy appliance manager that had an eye for the young ladies and didn’t care much for old ones and was rude, I should have sued the jerk.

Criminy! I hope they pay for all of that knowledge and training! I’m guessing not though. I knew there was a reason I don’t like Lowes.

I LOL’d when I got to this, “felt like I was working for the Gestapo” – wow, now that’s bad! I’m glad too you don’t have to work there anymore! My worst job was at McDonalds. I hated it. I think the worst part was I was in my late teens and at the age where I would go out late after work and meet friends and stuff, and because of working there I smelled like grease and french fries. :-(

I know just what you mean! I lost my mind for about six months last year and worked for Dunkin’ Donuts! It was like being trapped in high school and that wasn’t because I was working with teenagers…that was how “the adults” acted!

I know the Lowe’s experience was a pain, but reading it was hysterical. It sounds like a company out of a sci-fi film about a future slave world. I wish we could go back to the days when workers were called People instead of Human Resources.
