All i have to say is ANYONE who reads this, no matter HOW old you are.. Go out and get yourself some life insurance AND a will. My dad was 53 when he passed, and it was VERY VERY unexpected. And the worse thing is, i KNOW his biggest fear was leaving us without having made arrangements. He passed with NO will, NO live insurance.. All he had was his business which was a 2M a year business.. BUT since it wasnt WILLED to my mom, we had to go through probate, and there was a scarey time where his SUPPOSED best friend who was a logn time employee of his was going to fight it. This guy was a friend of my dad's since he was in his mid 20's and I called him UNCLE.> just 2 weeks after my dad passed, he told me mom that my dad said HE could have part of the business if he ever did pass.. We KNEW that was a big fat lie, but it scared the crap out of us.. he could have really fought it and made it REALLY hard for my mom and I to be in control.

The thing is, even people who you THINK are your best friends, are not necessarily going to be your FAMILY'S best friends when you pass. Its a sad thing to think about, but if you REALLY want to make sure your family is taken care of if you were gone, DO IT YOURSELF. Otherwise you are relying on others to take care of your loved ones, and you REALLY shouldnt. I learned that first hand.

Plus, buying life insurance at my age (26) is SOOOO cheap, adn you can keep it fora LONG time. Its just a good thing to have. I love my husband, and if i kicked, he would not be able to keep OUR house.. i would hate to see him struggle.. and the same visa versa.

JUST FREAKING DO IT!!!!!

<abbr><em>Lindsayanng’s last blog post..<a href="http://www.webdesignforidiots.net/2009/02/thirty-something-webite-review/" rel="nofollow">Thirty-Something webite review</a></abbr></em>

It is so easy to postpone these kind of things (perhaps until it is too late), because there are always so many things to do and you do feel that wills and trusts are for 'later', because today I have something that needs to be done before the end of the week.
Other duties come with a clear deadline, and I do not want to put all that aside for something that we might not need for many decades to come. But you are so right. You never know when you need it.
I'm emigrated to live with my husband and actually do not have any rights here if something happens to us. Not even the house. So, I guess it goes back on my to-do list again.

I keep putting this off, but if you have anything you wished passed to your family no matter WHAT age you are, at the very least you need a will so that your family doesn't get tied up in the horror that is probate court. Even if you have no appreciable monies, do you have property that you want a spouse or family member to inherit? And do you really feel that your family KNOWS you wishes and will honor them? A minimum level of forethought, such as a will, can prevent a lot of grief.

As much as nobody wants to think the worse, you really have to plan for it. With Joe's new job, he no longer had life insurance for me and the kids at work. He and I have additional coverage outside of his job, but I had to go get small policies for the kids--not really life insurance per se, but something to cover burial expenses. Most people don't think of such things, but dying is expensive!!!

Fred and I are not married either. We have each other's names on the car titles and the manufactured home title and all bank accounts. I will not be eligible for his social security nor the death benefit, (nor he of mine) but both of us have life insurance with each other as beneficiary. I only hope we have done enough.

Absolutely! Married or not, you both need to make your wishes clear and legal. Also about burial vs cremation, organ donation and so on. Get it on paper, witnessed and filed ASAP.

I don't have a will either. I plan on doing what my father did and take it all with me. Screw the kids! Seriously I do need one but just can't bring myself to consider the reality of it even though I have experienced the mess that happens when one does not have a will.
