I also watched the finale of "Life on Mars" with great regret because I loved this show--maybe unknowingly for many of the reasons you suggest--and couldn't understand why they would cancel it. To me, the ending was PERFECT! I am kicking myself for not figuring it out in advance. I mean, the title gives it away--"Life on MARS!"
