Does Your Widget Represent Your Blog?

Posted by: jude   in Marketing Online

This is my widget, if you saw it what in the world would you think my blog was about? I never really thought about it until I started clicking on other widgets and ended up on blogs that had nothing to do with what the widget implied. Lately when I have been dropping from my inbox I’ve really started watching closer because I try to reciprocate drops and the ones that really get me are the ones that have an attractive woman which lead to a marketing blog. I noticed this a lot more since the new changes at Entrecard and when I would check the blogs to approve or reject.

What in the world does having a picture of a young woman on a widget have to do with a marketing blog? I ran into a few widgets that one would assume belonged to a man trying to lure men to the blog, but the photos on those widgets belong not to a man and his blog, but to a woman that runs the blog. We are all use to men and advertising agencies being sexist and trying to get the attention of perverted men, but for a woman to stoop as low as men and use her own sex to lure simply boggles my mind.

Actually it doesn’t boggle my mind I just said that why shouldn’t that poor woman use the same tactics as her male marketing counterpart, most do have words that let you know it’s actually something to do with marketing, but why use a woman to get someone to click? Because she knows it works so why bother and be original and come up with something else that actually sells other than using a woman’s sexuality to stir a mans senses? Usually when I see an animal I think it’s a blog about animals or a baby leads me to believe it is a blog about babies.

I’ve been thinking about changing my widget, but by now it is recognized and people already associate it with a baby boomer that likes to ride a scooter and may or may not be senile depending on the post they might read on any particular day. I write about the things that concern me and lately that has been Entrecard because it seems to be on everyones mind right now. This will be my last post about Entrecard I may mention the program from time to time, but I wont devote another post to it. I’m sure people that don’t use the program have heard enough, sorry to those that don’t know what I’m typing about.

oooh certainly a great post.
I think my widget represent my blog because it’s a picture of ME. not sexy, but then again I guess that’s in the eye of the beholder; so to say.

I think that the widget may be one of the factors that lead others to click and read your blog, out of curiousity.

when I had my pic with the Vette up, it got less clicks than this one of my bio headshot while I was working doing my show, put turned slightly askew.

I was told that the askew angle forces people to turn their heads to look at the pic, so it gets their attention.

there are loads of cute icons out there, and I especially like the one on my website from Laane on the World for the 10 April NO DROP DAY for Entrecard.

have you seen it, please go take a look, grab it and participate with us. lets all just go look at some blogs, and NOT CLICK.

I absolutely recognize your widget and I always thought it was very appropriate. My widget was not thought out and original. I used a picture of my face. On both of my blogs it’s just a pic of me. haha I lack originality I think…or just time. I put some words on it and it’s what works. I have noticed what you are talking about. I see pics of sexy women posing and it’s a blog about making money. =/

Don’t change your widget! It’s you – the older lady with the bike, and mature or not it’s who you are. We all love it and recognise it.

I really like your widget! It shows your personality and it’s fun. I’ve wanted to add words to my widget, but don’t have the write program to make it look decent I guess!

I don’t mind the images of the widgets not being related to the blogs; however, I’d like to click on images that get my attention. They don’t need to be in a certain way. I guess what I meant was the images speak to me. I know I don’t click on certain images because they don’t speak to me, like my own widget.

Oh, don’t change your widget now! I identify you with that picture. It’s funny because Chuck just made me a widget/button and he questioned my little statue and why I use it to represent Duck and Wheel. Why no duck? he asks. Because that’s what I chose, and now that’s my identity. I don’t want to change it this far into the game, AND I like it. I won’t post about the EC thing and give them the free advertising. Did you see my solution today? I’m posting a pally’s button right next to the EC one so you can still drop and click–knowing you aren’t supporting the paid ads.

I also like your widget, it’s original. Mine is a headshot from my bio page with words on it that I’ve come to hate as they don’t describe my blog. Working on something different, maybe a sexy woman:)

I feel that your widget is appropriate. With the wordings ‘Mature Not Senile,’ I can identify it with someone who will not sit down, or will not resign to fate and would not stop trying new things just because of age.

I also think your widget is a good representation of your blog. It stands out. There are more than a few widgets of scantily clad women. While that might get some people’s attention, it does little to differentiate.

If anything, I’d think about changing the layout of the blog. If you look at my widget, I’ve tried to set it up so it matches the layout of my blog. The font type and color are the same on my widget as on the title of by blog. I have the same shade of red on the sides of my widget as I do on my blog.

I even try to get other sites, like Twitter and so one to match this look and feel, and I’ve made business cards with the same look and feel.

It is part of my personal brand. You might think about how you further your personal brand.

Great post.

Your widget should match what your blog is about. I get annoyed when I see widgets that are disconnected from the content of the blog. It’s like tricking people and pulling a bait-and-switch tactic. After that, I don’t care what they have to say.

My widget has one of my handbags on it, because my blog is about making handbags and other crafts.

Your widget is also well suited to your blog’s content.

Your widget is what brought me to your blog because I identify – I’m mature, not senile, too. I’ve gone out of my way to make sure that my widgets not only reflect what my blog is about, but what it looks like. I hate it when I click on a widget and it has nothing to do with the blog to which it leads.
