My Bumblebee Terrorist

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

Everyone is a critic of my smoking and that little black spot in the photo above which happens to be a bumblebee is no exception. I go out on my balcony occasionally for a break and to think and this little guy was tormenting me. I managed to snap a picture of the little devil after trying about 10 times. He has been patrolling my balcony all day and watching everything and scaring the crap out of me because he was acting so erratically and when another bee would fly in he chased it off so I looked up what I could find.

“I found this on bumblebee.org   A lone bee is hovering over my deck, patrolling my deck.
This is probably a carpenter bee male, he is harmless as he has no sting and is looking for soon to emerge females.”

I still don’t trust the little devil and I certainly don’t want to get stung. My balcony has a rubber roof and we have siding and the only wood is the post so if the horny little bee is waiting for females I think he must be in the wrong place. A few years back I had to have the phone company come out and change our telephone pole because it was full of those burrowing little critters and they were all over the place. Bill said they don’t sting, but from what I read on the site above some can.

I just read that the queen and workers can sting and are capable of stinging more than once, but the male can’t sting. At least he wasn’t out there after it got dark, but I’m sure he’ll be there in the morning waiting to torment me some more. Bill said there is one burrowing into the wood above his new trike dropping sawdust all over his bike and he wants me to kill it tomorrow. I Don’t Think So. I just read this on the site above ” Bumblebees do not dig their own nest and do not tunnel into wood. They may modify an existing space though.”

I don’t know if the above statement is true or not because of the incident with the phone pole, but if his is something else I certainly don’t want to be out there in an enclosed garage and make it mad at me. I have enough problems with my balcony bumblebee he can take care of his own.

Not to sure about that article on the carpenter bees. We have had them for years. they do make round holes in wood. Maybe the worker bees do that and the Male ones just hang out. Kind of like humans, lol. Females and children work in the yard,Males sit and watch, lol. there is one of those bee trying to get through my window all morning. Guess spring is here.

Bees…….I hear ya and don’t like them either. Hubby always tells me they won’t bother me; but they always bother me. Leave him alone might you; me…they chase and irritate. We have a wooden deck and so I know exactly what you mean about those that burrow. They’re huge bees too; but don’t know how to get rid of them. Plus all my flowers etc no doubt attract them.

How do you do that listing your previous blog titles after your current one?
Thanks
Sandy

Hey Girl, ,
it’s smarter to make a yellow jacket trap.

get a 2 liter bottle, cut the top off, where it enlarges – keep it.

then fill it with about 1″ of sweet juice, koolaid or pop in the bottom; none of that non cal crap – they want real sugar and only sugar based stuff.

if it’s an aggresive breed they may even like a small bit of pineapple in the bottle to hold their attention while they get stuck before drowning since they can’t fly out. yep.

invert the top and remove the cap, put it back ontop of the bottle, with the cap end facing down into the bottle to allow the critters to fly in.

they get drunk on the nectar in the bottom, and drown. simple but effective.

you should change it about every few days or as you accumulate critters.

this works for almost all flying pests.
as well they hate smoke.

try this – get a nice smoky fog going from the mosquito coils in a deep can – with holes punched in the sides; deep holes like from a screwdriver. that way the smoke escapes quickly and allows better air circulation.

my friends and I burn frankencense and myrr ontop of charcoal tablets in the smoker and it clears them out quickly.

they seem not to like the smoke for some reason. try not to swat at them, because it gives them a whiff of your pherenomes and they can home in on it anytime you are near.
they will be able to pick you out in a crowd once they get a whiff. it’s not a good thing.

and yes I am a naturalist – I graduated u of mich in 73′ from the school of Nat Sci and Computer Sci as my co bs.

ooohh yeah, put some thick tar like gum in the hole – friends use Polident Denture Adhesive; (I know) and put glue over it. that will make the eggs in the hole die and prevent them from reopening it.

sorry for the genocide tips.. but well you seemed to be in distress and I hate to see bugs and folks fight.

if you want to do a nice thing you might plant a sweet bush like a blackberry bush, on the ground and they will find that much more attractive – trust me.

or get yourself a butterfly bush and watch the action from inside your house. LOL

I am afraid of all bees–male carpenter not. I don’t want to get that close to see. They are the only thing I do not like about summer. I got stung once as a kid. One landed on my thumb when I was playing with a hula hoop and it stung me when the neighbor mom brushed it off. OUCHEE!

I can’t believe you actually caught that bee with your camera, and, that it’s big enough to see it in the photo.
Bees and ants, it’s amazing how they get so much work done and it’s all the workers that do it all while the queens just sit back and take it easy!
