I had to move my burning bush to another spot so I could plant my brand new baby. We bought a very young Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar. I saw one that was at the M&S Harley Davidson in Chambersburg and fell in love with the odd shape, but had no clue what it was. I’ve been checking online, but wasn’t sure what I was looking for so last week I went to the nursery in the rain with one of those huge umbrellas they supply and started searching up and down their huge supply of trees and shrubs.

There were several specimens with different names that looked the same, but I decided this one would be close enough and after I did a search for Weeping Blue Atlas Cedars it turned up a gazillion graphics. No 2 grow the same way and you can have it spread out to 20 ft. Since buying this conifer I look more closely at other people’s landscaping and I now spot them all over the place and they are all growing in different designs depending how the central leader was staked or if it wasn’t it grows closer to the ground.

I want mine to grow up at least 8 to 10 feet so I better think about how I’m going to stake it while it’s young. They grow on average from a foot to a foot and a half a year and I love the silvery-blue needles. The lady at the nursery sold me some special fertilizer to help prevent shock to the roots and a special plant mixture to add to the soil because around here it’s all red clay. It needs lots of water the first year, but after that not so much. I’m not a very experienced gardener so I hope I did it right.

I almost wrecked the car the other day when I was going to the store because down the street some lady has a huge one growing up and out like a living fence, it was beautiful. I noticed they had an elaborate pulley system attached to keep it growing in the direction they wanted. I’ll get a picture someday, but I don’t want mine to grow that way so I’ll have to figure out how to drape it closer. I thought about one of those 3 sided iron gazebos and just drape it over the top when it grows and then let it weep, I’ll decide later.

Bill doesn’t like it and thinks it’s ugly, but he bought it for me anyhow, now that’s love. Even as small as it is now it gives me so much pleasure just to look at it and imagine what it will look like someday when it gets bigger. Of course depending on how long I live I may wish I hadn’t gotten it especially if it takes over my very small yard. There’s a photo below and while I was taking photo’s so I can keep a record of how much they grow I snapped some of sun rays and the color spectrum which fascinated me also below. Need to go so I’ll close this up.

Jude, my friend. Here you are! A tree ugly? A poem comes to mind. A poem as lovely as a tree. I sent you an email, more like a letter, I used the only email address I had. I hope you get it. I miss you, my dear friend. Hope to catch up with you soon.

Hi Deb I was so surprised to get your e-mail and delighted to hear from you, it’s been way too long. I’ll try to answer later tonight. One of the nicest letters from a dear friend I’ve had in awhile. Love and miss all the fun times we had.
