Do You Think We Grow Into Our Names?

Posted by: jude   in Pappy and Nana

All expectant parents have fun deciding on a name for their child, they buy baby name books and look up the meaning for the name and the origin. Bill’s first wife’s parents had a thing for J so all their kids were named using that initial and they expected their children to carry on their tradition and all of them did except for Bill’s Son and he put his foot down and said the boy would be named after him. Needless to say the little boy wasn’t treated as well as all the other J Grandkids, now how childish and mean is that?

Many parents have sentimental names picked out and in my case my first love had decided Eric David would be his Son’s name which I fell in love with and when I gave birth at 16 that’s exactly what he was named. When I was pregnant I didn’t even consider a girls name and knew it would be Eric David. Eric decided not to name his Son after him because he was afraid the boy would be as mean as him so named him Ethan David instead which means strong one and friend. He will need to be strong since his Father is no longer here.

Eric by the way means ruler of all and he actually thought he was. He was very head strong and everything had to be his way even as a little boy, if I had only knew the meaning of that name I might have had second thoughts about calling him that. Ethan was suppose to be up this week, but I haven’t heard anything yet. She doesn’t like to keep me informed very often and really doesn’t seem to care that I might worry, that old saying is so true about a Son is a Son until he takes a wife, but a Daughter is a Daughter all her life, okay enough of that.

I told you about Bill’s Son expecting another baby in Feb. 2010. The last one if it had been a boy was going to be called after Bill, but now it seems with this one they are entertaining the name Blade William. Needless to say he’s not overly fond of the name, he told his Son he might as well call it Switchblade or Slingblade. I have no clue where young people come up with some of the weird names they saddle their children with. I have noticed lately a trend to use the outdated names again which I as an older person can relate to.

Everyone wants their children to be unique and different, but I’ve noticed over the years people tend to grow into their names. What’s wrong with good solid old-fashioned names? Also people name their children weird names and then call them by their initials, what’s up with that? They now have a TJ and a AJ both girls and we refuse to use their initials we call them by their given name, although the other side uses them to identify their grandchildren. I told Bill at least the middle name doesn’t start with an M, how would you like to be referred to as BM as in bowel movement?

Have a great weekend!

You got a point, lol. Initials can be bad. Lets see my brothers boys would be SE, ME, SO,& MA, now I ask you does that sounds like vocal workout, lol. I know sometime we do not think about the initials, and later on they just happen. them we wish we had insight!
Now for the names, My niece has named her kids very odd names. so I have given them all nicknames, so I never have to pronounce their names. I’m with you let’s go back to simple names, family names or just names that doesn’t label them later on in life.

I like family names, I like tradition. My older is Chuck (Charles), as is my Dad, as was his Dad, sorta (his dad was Charles Albert, but people called him Albert…his dad was Charles Frederick…4 generations of the family name. Actually it had been used in various forms before that back in Germany Carl etc, but back to the current time. My older brother’s first son was given the family name Charles Eric , but everyone called him Eric. I was unhappy to learn he had his name legally changed to Eric Charles. The end of a long standing tradition. He broke the chain.

We thought about how one’s name changes with age so to speak and used that in choosing our daughter’s name. Her given name is Christine, a beautiful name I think (and my middle name), she was Chrissy in her growing up years here at home; but once she left to work in another state she became Christine, she continued that when she went away to college, everyone beyond family knows her as Christine. When her boyfriends would be around and called her Christine, I made the effort to call her that. So, yes…she grew into her name. Hubby calls her Chris, most of the time I still call her Chrissy…habits are hard to break.

Blade? OMG, did they indicate why or what made them choose that name? Have they realized it will be a source of difficulty for him in his growing up years in school, it will give kids an excuse to make fun of him. Not intentionally sometimes, but kids can be quite gruel, they should rethink that, maybe Blake?

I know my daughter definitely made a mistake with her 2nd to the youngest. unless he grows up to be very rich!!

Now why did I say that? His name is Chase and she has been chasing him ever since he could crawl. He is a wild man and she isn’t one of those mothers who doesn’t believe in discipline.

He just doesn’t care and he can think of some of the most incredible and dangerous places and things to get into.

It’s like watching a sitcom all day when you visit. Now the other thing is when she told me the name they had picked is that all I can think off is Chase Manhattan bank.

Oh dear, and they are robbing all of us. I hadn’t thought of that aspect. I do know she learned her lesson.

The new baby’s name is Jonah. Now we just have to watch out for any really big fish!!

Great post and fun!!

Yes, I too feel there is something to people growing into their names. The same goes for nicknames. But not too much should be made out of it.
When I look at the lives of George Washington and George Bush the first name at least should have yielded remarkable similarities. In fact all Toms should be similar! What about Tom cats?
Lightness apart I do feel that there is something in a person’s name shaping him or her.
