Ducks For Pets
duck-drake
The duck and drake above live next door to me and Sadie is forever jumping at them when they come too near the fence so you may be able to picture the horror on my face when we had Shadow and Sadie out on Saturday and the Mallard decided to fly over the fence for a visit. I was dumbfounded, but not Sadie she jumped so fast at that stupid duck and almost had it in her mouth before I got my wits back and yelled for her to stop. Bill finally got a hold of her and put her in the house before the stupid duck either lost it’s life or all it’s feathers from all the shaking Sadie would have done.
Sadie Guarding The Fence

I sit on the balcony and watch these ducks flapping their wings and squawking all the time and I’ve seen the Mallard take off in flight several times, once straight out into the alley road which cars like to speed down. I’m thinking this girl might want to make a responsible decision and have the wings clipped if she intends to keep them for 20 fricking years. That’s how long ducks can live and they are very sociable birds so you should never buy just one if your thinking about one for a pet. I know Sadie’s dying to have one, but I don’t think as a pet.
Duck Eggs
duck-eggs
The big white duck started laying eggs last month and the first couple she laid on the sidewalk and they cracked open so neighbor girl had to hose everything down. The girl told me I’d have to try one when she started laying good and I had to politely tell her not in this life time, but thanks. I will usually try anything once, but duck eggs aren’t on my list, my brother said they have a strong taste when I told him about the eggs. She now lays them all over their yard and the girl picks them up and puts them in a pile and just leaves them, I guess she doesn’t want to eat them either.

Her kids wont even go into the backyard without a 2by4 to shoo them away and feed them because they’re afraid of them. Those ducks make a run at those kids and it scares them silly and that’s usually my cheap entertainment for the day. However when neighbor girl is out there they’re very docile and love her and follow her around except when the Mallard was learning to fly and looked like the Red Baron swooping down on her head while she was grilling something. I also found that very comical, “Oh look kids we’re having Daffy for dinner.”

I’m not a big fan of ducks for neighbors, but at least they don’t bark all day and night like the poor dog she had 2 years ago and neglected. I wont even start on that, I’m trying to be a nice neighbor now. She called me over to the fence the other day and made me touch one of her duck eggs even though I said no thanks, she insisted so I gingerly reached one finger out and touched it and recoiled because it didn’t have a shell it was just the membrane encasing all that gooey stuff, yuck it was weird all the rest have shells.

I was reading about why some eggs might not have a shell and found out that it just happens sometimes or it could be from lack of calcium or caused from stress. Maybe it scared her just as much when she saw Sadie almost grab hold of her companion as it did me. She carries on like crazy when that Mallard decides to go flying. I really don’t want to have to check my yard every time before I let my Sadie out so I guess I’ll just have to prepare myself to see Daffy laying sprawled all over the yard someday and feathers sticking all over our Sadie and wait for Bill to come home and clean up the mess.

I find it very strange that you don’t like duck eggs.

Do you eat chicken eggs? I mean what’s the difference? Apart from the duck eggs sound like they are layed by a very organic bird, whilst the chicken eggs you eat… well, you never know what those birds have been though!

Give them a try! They’re just eggs.

Chinaren I’ve never eaten a duck egg so I really don’t know if I’d like it or not. I did try duck once and it made me sick so maybe it’s just an aversion because of that. Chicken has never made me sick and my uncle raised them and for the longest I had an aversion to their eggs because I saw a embryo in one with splatters of blood when my Mother cracked it open so I would never knowingly eat another egg until I was much older and knew they weren’t freshly laid.

If her kids are afraid to go out in the yard you would think she had sense enough to take these ducks to a pond and set them free! Maybe the ducks outweigh the kids in her mind.

Yes, the taste is very strong. The yolk is thicker than chicken eggs.

Buggys she says she loves them and is even going to make her pond bigger for them. I have no clue how the woman thinks, I know she screams a lot at the kids.

Dogs Deserve- Thanks for letting me know about the duck eggs.

Seems like the neighbor girl should consider sometime of coop or something rather than just letting the ducks wander/fly wherever they want. It’s odd too that the one duck just lays her eggs any old place, that just doesn’t seem right.

I’m really confused on why this dame has these ducks. I’m thinking she needs to contain them to her yard or they are gonna be dog bait soon enough. And the eggs? Why not dispose of them–I would think they’ll get rotten and then break, stinking up the place. Why, oh why, do some people get pets when they shouldn’t??

I think she needs to realize that her birds should not be in an urban setting. the ducks don’t like to mate outside their geneology either. theres always someone out there who ignores nature and causes problems for the poor animals, like these ducks. if it gets worse, why not report it to the aspca because this is duck abuse; whether you realize it or not. the ducks are not near water and have no natural way to lay and hatch.

bad situation indeed.

These are ducks that she bought from the Tractor Supply in our area and I have no clue what you are talking about. She has a biracial family so I figured she wanted her ducks to be the same, who am I to judge? I don’t think they would sell her diseased birds, but what the hell do I know?

Oh we love ducks and geese!! unfortunately for us and them we live way out in the country and have come under attack from bobcats for 3 years now.

It’s been ages since we actually had one lay, set and successfully hatch a brood. It was wonderful though when they did hatch.

We watched the entire process and then the babies as they grew. They quick little boogers when they are small.

I lost my last one from the babies born here last year to a bobcat and was heart sick.

But, so goes nature. We now have a float built for them out in our pond and have slowed down the killing quite a bit.

We are hoping to get them a more natural place built very soon where they can be safe out in the water, lay eggs and have babies.

By the way Dakota our German Sheppard also loved our ducks. We finally had to resort to an electrical wire as he would jump our 6 ft. fence to get to them.

Happy day!

Re: an earlier post. Fifty six makes you a whipppersnapper.

I’ve eaten a variety of eggs and always found home raised the best, regardless of species.

Turkey eggs are best left to grow up.
