Haines Shoe House

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

Haines Shoe House
Address:195 Shoe House Road., Hellam, PA
Directions:Just south of Rt. 30, west of Hellam, north off Hwy 462 on Shoehouse Rd.

I enlarged my photo below so you can see the door into the sole of the shoe house that’s where you’ll find the snack bar area. You can get ice cream and drinks and  you can also purchase souvenirs.

I have lived in York, PA since 1968 off and on and permanently since 1987 and as many times as I passed the shoe house on the freeway I never bothered to check it out till a couple years ago. Bill and I decided to take the tour of this unique structure that was built in 1948 by “Colonel” Mahlon N. Haines as an advertising gimmick.

It’s a wood frame structure covered with wire lath and coated with a cement stucco. It measures 48 ft. in length, 17 ft. in width at the widest part and 25 ft. in height. The interior has five different levels and contains three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen and living room. I loved going through and the lady that owns it now has her guided tour tone all ready and you can tell she’s told this same history many times.

She tells you all about how it was used as a honeymoon cottage for the shoe company employees and tells funny little anedotes. You’re not allowed to take photos of the inside, but it’s adorable and my imagination and romantic side was working overtime.  It has stain glassed windows and a lot of memorabilia. I loved that we finally took the time and took the tour.

That looks pretty fun! I’d get a kick out of living in a house like that, lol

That’s really neat. I’ve seen a house that is like a castle and one like a boat, but never a shoe.

That is the neatest little thing I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe one day when you’re not busy you can take some pics of the inside!

Just wandered on in while looking for other blogs with Comment Luv – just installed it myself and like it a lot.

There are lots of things we pass by every day and take for granted; a friend noted that the only time he really sees the sights of Philadelphia, where he lives, is when he has to entertain people.

I’m curious about the stain glass windows; they sound awfully elaborate for a house shaped like a shoe. How did that work?

Now, that’s what I call a smashing-looking house! So surreal… too bad we can’t see what’s inside.

The stain glass in the front door has the guy that had it built incorporated into it holding a pair of boots and the others of course have a boot in them. It’s really a cool place too bad inside photos aren’t allowed.

Thank you! That makes sense, now that I hear it described.

I wish I could link you to my last little trip around Philadelphia, but comment luv doesn’t reach that far back in my post collection.

Very cool! Who wouldn’t want to live in a shoe? There’s a house in Zionsville, PA that’s built like Noah’s Ark. It juts out of a hill over a pond and looks like it’s ready to sail.

That looks like a fun place to see! Funny how we miss things that are so close to us sometimes. Glad you finally stopped and took the tour to share with us.

I must go and see this! I love it. My sister lives just outside of York so how far away is it from there? I’m going there next weekend probably.

Depends on which direction she lives, I’m sure if she lives around here she would know where it is. Hellam is going toward Lancaster and you can see it from route 30. You can always use Google maps.

Wow, I grew up in Philly but traveled all over the state to see various tourist sights. Not only did I never see this house, but I never even heard of it. My kids would love this, maybe we’ll see it when we’re back visiting PA.
