Pumpkin Smashing

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

Vandalism is getting pretty rampant where we live. Not long ago someone broke the mirror off our neighbors brand new car and when we got the jeep a few years ago they keyed the whole side. A couple weeks ago the empty house down the street was strewn with garbage and beer cans dumped all over the place. I’ve seen a lot more patrol cars around our area recently so I know they are trying to keep things under control, but somehow they manage to miss the kids that are doing the vandalism. I’m sure everyone has experienced some type of vandal in their area.

Halloween is right around the corner and people have their decorations up everywhere except for me I really don’t do much decorating any more.  For whatever reason kids seem to love to bust up pumpkins, last year some little brat threw a small one on our front porch and it was a mess to clean up. The other night some older kids decided to decorate the intersection up the street and busted them all over the road. Someone  gathered them together and left them on the corner, hopefully the Borough will pick them up today before they rot.

Sunday I took the day off, away from the Internet, everyone needs a break now and then. We went looking for a yo-yo for Nate, years ago they were everywhere and very popular just like the hola hoop, but now with all the sophisticated toys around they seem to have lost their appeal. We did eventually find one though and dropped it off. I remember how much fun I had with mine years ago and now Nate can enjoy the same fun Bill and I experienced without spending a fortune.

While we were out riding we went through Red Lion and saw a bunch of young people spending their time decorating the windows of the businesses with Halloween drawings and paintings so at least I know there are still a lot of great kids out there spending their time doing nice things for their communities instead of trying to destroy it. I’d love to move away from the city and the high school we live so close to maybe that’s why our vandal rate is so high.

I remember Yo-Yo was one of my favorite toys during my younger days; it was inexpensive fun indeed. I hope those kids who are busting the pumpkins don’t create a hazard to other road users. I am just as glad that there are still good people who move the busted pumpkins to a corner and also to the kids who are doing nice things for the communities.

I don’t get it..what has happened to the youth of today. We have it here also. We do not participate in Halloween due to it has gotten so bad here. kids do all kinds of pranks whether or not they get candy. So why should I put pumpkins out or pay all that money for stuff. We just turn off all the lights and stay in with our candy and watch Movie in the basement. I wish it wasn’t so bad. the small kids do not go door to door trick- or-treat anymore around here.

I don’t know why kids (teens) think it’s fun to mess up other people’s stuff and smash pumpkins. My dad quit putting up Christmas lights outside because kids would steal them.

I don’t know why kids love to smash pumpkins, and they are very messy to clean up. When we lived out in the country kids also smashed lots of pumpkins, and since they were doing this on dark country roads the police didn’t find them either.

I just don’t understand where the parents think these kids are when they’re out doing these things. We’ve heard kids TPing houses after midnight. Way too late for unsupervised teens.

I used to hate it when the kids and I would carve pumpkins and put them out only to find them smashed in the road the next morning. One year we did pumpkins 3 times and each time they smashed them all.

I think there are a lot more good kids than bad, it’s just the things the bad kids do that really stand out. Kids these days are one extreme or the other and I feel really sorry for the ones who have no direction or parental guidance. Everything is college oriented in the schools and if you aren’t one of those kids, it’s tough to have a plan for the future. All the shop classes have been eliminated and there is nothing for the girls. It’s hard to be a kid. That said, my house was egged 2 nights in a row last Halloween by some kids who didn’t like my son. Great–me and my husband had the mess, NOT my son. Great effect it had–we went to each of their houses to speak to their parents and guess what the general reaction was? “Yeah? So?” I even had one dad threaten us! Amazing. Guess why Junior is an idiot.

I think the general harmless stuf around Halloween is almost a right of passage. The pumpkin smashing or tp your neighbors yard. Breaking and violating a persons automobile, whole different set of kids I bet.
Have you seen the yo-yos for little ones? They always come back to you! Very cool.
