As far as I know the following are the states that have a full helmet law, meaning everyone must wear one. So if your traveling by motorcycle and you’re use to not wearing a helmet in your state make sure you are wearing one in any of the following: Alabama, California, DC, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

Of course like everything else the above list is subject to change so most people to be on the safe side always wear their helmets. There are pros and cons that many people argue over when it comes to the individual having the right to choose for themselves. I personally hate helmets they give me a headache and I was glad when PA passed the no helmet law for people over the age of 20. Of course I have people preach at me all the time, but they are just wasting their breath, for now it’s my choice.

Over the years I’ve seen many accidents involving motorcycles and some were wearing helmets and some weren’t, I’ve seen them die with and without. My Son always referred to a helmet as a bucket to carry your head in which sounds gross, but that’s the way many riders feel. As far as I know there are 3 states that have no law what so ever for any age and those are: Iowa, Illinois, and New Hampshire. I’m sure everyone has their own idea about these helmet laws, but personally I like having the choice to decide for myself however if I had a young child I might rethink my choice.

I would think helmets would be mandatory in every state. As a nurse, I’ve heard the reasoning about not wearing a seatbelt as those might give for not wearing a helmet. When it comes to my life I rather err on the side of caution.

My DIL is a nurse so is Bill’s daughter and I have many friends that are also nurses and believe me I’ve heard it all, but it’s still my choice and I’m going to die from something any way I go. Thanks for stopping and voicing your concerns very much appreciated.

The city of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina also has a helmet law if you’re inside the city limits. Just thought I’d pass that along if anyone is planning a trip there. They also have decibel limits.

Helmets give me a headache too but I would feel safer knowing that my friends and/or family were wearing them. I don’t think it should be mandatory, but I think not wearing one is still an unwise choice.

Sandra I think that’s ridiculous and they’ve lost a lot of money because bikers refuse to go into that city. Well not all, but revenue is certainly down and they are being sued so maybe that ordinance will be overturned. Here’s a post Myrtle Beach Helmet Law Stirs Anger

I`ve traveled to the States many times but I can remember the first time being surprised to see people on bikes not wearing helmets because as long as I can remember it`s always been the law in Canada – for all provinces.

I don`t have an opinion either way – as an old fart stuck in my ways it was only a couple of years ago that I finally gave in to wearing a seat belt when driving!

I know many people who were thrilled when Pa changed the helmet laws, the only thing I find really strange is that they don’t require you to wear a helmet but they do make it madatory that you wear a seat belt in a car. I don’t understand the logic.

I think Ohio requires a helmet, because a friend of ours was ticketed for not wearing one, and because he had his young daughter on the back also without a helmet was forced to leave the bike there and walk home.

A co-worker’s husband is about to enter year 10 of living in a coma come this Thanksgiving for an accident he was in due to not wearing a seat belt. He was 2 blocks from their home, and they were newly weds. He’s decision not to wear one, has forever changed many lives….and not for the better.
