Praise Versus Negativity

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Misc

If you give the tiniest amount of praise instead of negativity you will definitely get more accomplished. Everyone likes to feel appreciated and worthy. We all have self doubt at times and all we need is a little kindness and an encouraging word to make us feel better and even do better.

I firmly believe  if people tried to find less fault and tried to create a more positive outlook on things the world would be a nicer place to live in. “Never criticize until you’ve walked a mile in someone else’s shoes and You’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Show someone something by example not by pointing them out and making them feel stupid and resentful. This might make you feel superior, but it doesn’t do much good for the other person. It’s too easy for us to pick someone else apart instead of looking at ourselves. I always try to live by the the golden rule “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.”

It is so easy to tell other people how to do something and expect them to do it and stand back and point out everything they are doing wrong, but if the shoe is on the other foot and you are standing behind that same critical person while they are doing something believe me when under pressure they don’t do so good either.

I recall 2 instructors when I went to beauty school and I’m a firm believer in those that can, do and those that can’t,  talk about it. One instructor actually worked in a salon and actually knew what she was talking about from trial and error and could go from the classroom to the floor and show you your mistake without making you look like an idiot.

The other worked in a salon 20 years ago and knew by the books what was suppose to be done, but couldn’t do it herself not even in class, but boy could she point out everything you were doing wrong and didn’t care about anyone’s feelings and always negative. Can you guess which instructor taught me more?

Having been a teacher all my life, I agree with this too. It’s really hard to do, because for most of us, the faults jump out and the positive things hide behind them. But, if you can do a little searching for the good things, students respond to praise in amazing ways!

Boy, are you right. I’ve always heard that you get more with honey than vinegar.

What a wonderful reminder. I think we all could use a little more of this especially at this time of the year when everyone seems to be going nuts.

Definitely praise beats negativity any day. Speaking of praise, I enjoy reading your posts. They show insight and maturity.

I couldn’t agree more! Too bad there aren’t more parents out there who realize the power of praise. Discipline is so much better and well received when praise is incorporated.

I try to compliment people whenever I can, especially if they look a little down. I’m always surprised what a difference it makes when I’m in the super market during a busy time and I mention to the cashier how well she moving everyone through the line at such a busy time of day. It feels great to make someone smile when they are down.

As far as teachers who criticize, I’ve never understood that. I think that the ones who criticize probably have more issues with themselves than they do with the poor person that they’re criticizing.
