Losing a pet is the worst, especially when they're like one of your kids. When my pekingese died back in 2002, I started going to the shelter looking for another dog shortly thereafter. My sister thought I was horrible for wanting to replace her so soon, but I didn't see it that way. Like you, I wanted another dog to take my mind off of Prissy, who died right at my feet. I didn't want to replace her, just move on. When I finally adopted Bella, she had so many weird personality quirks in common with Prissy that sometimes I wonder if she was Prissy reincarnated or at least if that was Prissy's way of saying it was okay. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say in a long-winded way is that, while your new furbaby will never replace Shadow, I know he's going to bring you lots of joy and healing, the way Bella did for me.
