Training With Obie/ Crappy Weather

Posted by: jude   in Mature Not Senile Pets

I had suggested waiting for Spring to get a puppy because of the weather and I knew we would be in and out every time we turned around. I know Bill was really impressed with this little dog the first time we saw it because Obie was pretty calm. We did walk away from him and even looked other places and then went back a week later and Bill said if he was still there then we’d get him since they had dropped the price and he was still there he figured Obie was meant for us.

Well, he is a nice little guy, but I’m fricking tired and my bones are getting old and cold. What crappy weather to housebreak a puppy in. If it’s not snow and ice then it’s raining and he does make a bunch of mistakes even though I’m using a crate and watch him like a hawk when he’s out, he’s pretty darn quick. Of course unless I catch him in the act it does no good to scold him. I need to teach him how to let me know when he needs to go out, we haven’t gotten that far yet.

I had forgotten how much work and responsibility it takes to have a well mannered and behaved housebroken companion. I am finding it difficult training because of Sadie and I feel guilty that she isn’t getting the same attention, but she already knows all this stuff. With Shadow I used a shaker can with coins in it to curb his bad behavior, but I can’t use that with Obie because Sadie thinks I’m punishing her for something.

We are also socializing Obie so we have been taking him in the Jeep and yesterday we took him for a short ride on the trike to get him use to the noise and the new adventure, he did very well all snuggled up in my jacket. We plan on getting a carrier for the trike so we can take him with us and there again we feel guilty leaving Sadie behind, but it’s something we’ll just have to get over and so will she because it’s what Bill wants. He wanted to take Shadow, but he was just to big and so is Sadie.

I also know it’s confusing for a pup when both people and everyone else in your household do not use the same commands. I think when one person can do the training and make sure the little pup knows what is required then it really doesn’t matter what anyone else says when they’re older they seem to just realize once they are on a schedule. I bought all natural small treats to help with the basic training like sit, up, and down, but there again Sadie thinks she’s suppose to join in the training and get the same treats.

They also recommended Royal Canin33  puppy food since that’s what they were feeding him and he was pooping all over the place and lots of it, yuck talk about smelly, but when I checked about Westies it said they were prone to allergies and shouldn’t have food with beef, wheat, and corn so we changed him to Nature’s Recipe and I didn’t have to search all the labels everything I needed to know was right on the front of the package and believe me it’s made a big difference he doesn’t poop as often and not as much when he does and it doesn’t stink as bad.

I can  feed this as a puppy, adult, and senior. I’m sure there are many great brands out there, but so far so good with this one so I’ll stick with it and only natural treats and carrots. I’m learning a lot about this breed and I love the fact that there’s very little shedding and very low dander which is great since Bill has asthma. Well, I need to go see what the little brat is into now, he has mastered the stairs with those little short legs and cracks me up going down, first the front paws then the back ones sideways until he gets to the bottom few then either takes them head on or jumps the rest.

My wife and I, our first dog together was a puppy. Horrendous. We had to give her away after a few or several months. Then our 5th dog was still a ‘puppy’ too. We lasted 2 weeks with him. Ugh.
Schatzie, mature when we adopted her, we had for 14 years. Sasha and Beezer, neither were puppies, we had for about 5 years each with some overlap time and Georgia, about 4 when we got her, we’ve had for 3 years so far.
We do prefer mature dogs, but hope that Georgia will last a long time yet so we won’t think about getting another.
When we had Beezer and Sasha together, we tried to train Beezer to ask to go out. When he went out, we gave him a treat, and we had to give Sasha one too. That was okay. But Beezer got the idea that he would just go out, turn right around, come in and get a treat. We’ve been failures at training dogs, but lucky to have gotten the ones we’ve had.

It is such hard work to train a puppy. It will go quickly though and you will enjoy him more and more. Good luck.

Oh my gosh, it really is not a job for the faint hearted! So much work, and so much love and loyalty in return!

Hi Jude,
Just happy you have Obie now and it will all work out for you. Good luck with the dog potty training and behavior, it is not always easy and the winter weather doesn’t help matters. Have a nice day! :-)

That’s great you got Obie! Sounds like switching his food was a good idea. Why not give Sadie training treats too? You can reinforce things she already knows. I wouldn’t leave her out if I wer you. Maybe you could even try teaching her some new things. Puppies are a lot of work–that’s why I’m glad we got an older dog that was already housebroken.

Karen & Gerard Sadie gets a small treat when she comes in from doing her good girl, we are watching her weight because she’s 9 years old. Sadie tries to take over the sessions and the little dog focuses on her instead of what I’m trying to teach him, that’s not allowed. when he learns some rules and boundaries then Sadie will be more involved. They play good together except when Sadie tries to dominate and hump the little guy, which is quite frequently. I was just wondering about you haven’t seen you in awhile.

Robin thank-you, I know Obie has certainly occupied our mind and thoughts from dwelling on Shadow and our loss.

Buggys and Karen thanks for stopping and lending moral support, it really is more work than I remembered from over 10 years ago.

Gregory I will certainly check out your slide show I love looking at other peoples pets. My Shadow in his old age got to the point that if anyone went out including us he thought he was suppose to have a treat and would sit and look at the treats then look at us and speak until we gave him one. Man, I loved that dog.

Oh I can remember trying to get Duke housebroke. What a pain. I didn’t know that about the allergies. The woman we got Duke from was feeding him Purina and that’s what I’ve stuck with. Plus my husband feeds him table scraps all the time. We haven’t had much trouble though. You should see Duke going down stairs sometimes. It almost looks like he jumps from the top steps and flies to the bottom…lol

You are so knowledgeable about dogs. One of the reasons we don’t have one is because none of us would know what to do.

p.s. Lucky you for the hair thing. :0)

It’s sort of like childbirth having a puppy–You forget how awful it is until it is time to do it again! :) Good luck!

Our house is 60+ years old, and even though we’ve lived in the house going on 30 years and have never had a dog it still can at times smell like one. Not pleasant. We had our hardwood floors redone in the dining room a couple of years back. They had been carpeted and the guy that did them said …I didn’t know you had a dog. We don’t, and we never did. Urine from animals is something you just can’t get rid of. This many years later when he sanded the floors you could smell it, and in a few places the wood is dark from the damage.

I agree with you, waiting til Spring or better yet summer would have been a really good choice. His little accidents, are doing more damage than anyone knows at the time.

Good Luck and do keep us posted.
