New Marketers/Getting Sales Isn’t Easy

Posted by: jude   in Marketing Online

I know many people that are trying to make money at home and marketing online. They dream of finding the right program to get involved with and many turn to affiliate marketing because it’s the easiest and cheapest way to start, but you have to know your target market for the niche you are promoting and where to find them. I have never been able to really think outside the box even though I have read numerous reports on how to be successful at it and over the years I have tried just about everything out there.

I see more and more people starting up the let me show you how to make money online blogs, but they want you to buy their report and most of them don’t even have a clue themselves their motto is “fake it till you make it.”  Or those plug and profit businesses in a box that are all the same. I got suckered in with the CBmall business way back and I never even see those anymore, but I’m sure it’s still around somewhere because I still get e-mails from the creator.

You can find a lot of blogs that cover affiliate marketing in depth for free don’t waste your money on reports if that’s something you’ve been considering, but there’s much to consider like your affiliate links being hijacked or removed so you don’t receive a commission. Like I said I do a few affiliate programs now, but nothing compared to when I first started.

8 years ago I thought the more the merrier maybe someone would click on something, but they seldom do because it’s too confusing. So do your best to keep it simple and direct and focus on just a few.

Most people online try to teach you how to stay home and make money and some actually do, but it simply doesn’t work for many. I make a few dollars here and there. If I had to support myself I’d be starving by now from the income I generate online. I could probably teach you how to lose money online and as far as I’m concerned that’s exactly what most of the opportunities to make money are all about.

I have learned that you need a user friendly web site with original content that people will find useful and helpful because the majority of people come online to find information or entertainment not to buy so if you provide good content and concentrate on only a few affiliate products the statistics I’ve read in the past say you will have a better chance of someone actually clicking through and purchasing something and making a sale. I doubt that you will be able to quit your day job unless your a brilliant marketer.

Most people like a simple, but professional looking website and If your blog or website has lots of advertisements and flashy banners and is full of affiliate links or ad blocks before they even see your content then they may get confused and not understand what your site is all about. I know when I visit a busy looking site if I don’t see what I’m looking for I simply close that site down and go to the next. Don’t make it so hard for your visitor to find your information and lose a possible sale.

I’ve been told by the experts that people will click on text links more often than the flashy banners.  I don’t like to add a lot of distraction for the viewers on the website I use for business. I try to keep it simple because people like to visit a site that loads quickly and they get very impatient and leave if they have to wait for graphics and videos to load, your load time is very important. I know people that have actual products they sell online and even they are struggling. I’m not saying they aren’t making sales, but many are barely able to stay afloat.

I have friends that want me to show them how to make a blog so they can sell their jewelry online and I try to explain to them that it’s not that easy to make those sales because of all the competition and it would be easier to make sales at a show. Many newbies though think if they build a website that they will be flooded with orders and make a fortune, sorry to say unless it’s a very unique product then it’s not going to happen. People don’t realize they have to spend money on advertising, getting targeted traffic, and so many other things.

Ad Overload

Posted by: jude   in Marketing Online

I really don’t see ads any more, I tend to just block them out as I’m sure many of you guys do. That’s why I get irritated when I get distracted by a bunch of blinking and flashing widgets, but I guess that’s why they do it, to get your attention.

I’ve had the Project Wonderful ads on this blog for a month or maybe a little longer and to date this blog has made 1.76. That is cheap advertising and like one blogger mentioned it’s a waste of space so I moved it to the bottom of the page so I don’t have to look at it and if it ever reaches 11 dollars I’ll remove it.

I put the Chitika ads on another blog that receives search engine traffic only. It’s been running for about 2 weeks and already made that blog 4.88  so maybe I’ll try it here. I do have the Chitika referral button on my sidebar, but I seriously doubt that anyone will use it so it’s probably just taking up space also.

I did return the Adgitize widgets, but I really haven’t been working that system and there are only 2 (which I have now moved to the bottom because people have flashing widgets which I hate.) I did advertise with them when I first signed up, but really didn’t have much luck so I stopped. I put it back so Entrecard droppers could kill 2 birds with one stone, I hate that phrase and I have no clue why I use it because I wouldn’t want to kill any birds.

This blog makes 2 cents a day from Adgitize so in a year and a half I might make 10 dollars for the space. As you can see I’m very ambitious (not). I really don’t like looking at a bunch of ads myself so I try to keep mine at a minimum.

I noticed that there are 9 advertisers sharing the Entrecard widget and I was allowed to block 4 of them so at least I get a little bit of control. I really hope no one advertises with me for awhile because sometimes I just don’t feel like dropping and I feel like I’m letting those people down when they aren’t getting clicked on.

I really hate feeling guilty so I have decided not to worry about it any more and if they don’t get clicks then they wont advertise again. I seldom ever check to see how many clicks I get from the blogs I advertise on, but I know many people keep track, I’m just grateful for the traffic I do get, so thanks for stopping and reading.

Clickbank 5 Credit Card Requirement

Posted by: jude   in Marketing Online

Most marketers use Clickbank because it’s the largest Internet marketplace for digital products and affiliates who want to sell them, but if you don’t sell a large quantity of products then you end up paying them if you have money in your account and you haven’t met their CDRCustomer Distribution Requirement.

If you have a Clickbank account I would advise you to read their Accounting Policy. I posted about this awhile back for those that use Clickbank and didn’t realize why they weren’t being paid even though they had the payout at 25 dollars. I have been paid in the past until they made these changes and I couldn’t understand why they kept deducting and not paying me so when I did finally get around to rereading as I was directed to do I then saw why.

I know lots of people use Clickbank and I have had an account for several years, but I haven’t really been promoting my website that I sell e-books on for quite sometime. Every once in awhile I get a random sale and I have it set to pay out at 25 dollars. I never had a problem until the end of last year.

They require 5 different credit cards during the year before they will payout and many people use their paypal account instead of a credit card so they don’t count that toward the requirement. I did have 49 dollars in my account which they started deducting a dollar every 2 weeks simply because they can. They do this with dormant accounts and since my sales weren’t very active my account  was considered dormant.

I didn’t have enough purchases by credit cards so the money I did have in that account was a donation to Clickbank. In my opinion that sucks, but if I pushed for more sales then I wouldn’t have that problem. At the end of last year the same thing happened also and the few measly bucks dwindled fast and the last 2 payments instead of a dollar they took 4 and then 5.

I need to decide if I want to get rid of the account I have used for so long since I have proven to myself  over the past couple of  years that I’m not a very profitable affiliate marketer. I would  have to delete everything I have connected with them and that’s going to be a pain. I hate when you go through all that trouble to set stuff up then a couple years later everything unravels.

Just like my original websites when I set up different ads through CJ and some of the others, lots of the companies that advertised through them would cancel their affiliate accounts and you have to go through and remove all those stupid ads, what a pain. I am going to soon go through those sites and move all the information to my main site and just delete them all. What a waste of time.

Can You Quit Your Day Job?

Posted by: jude   in Marketing Online

There are many new online businesses starting, but even though they look good and start out strong if you don’t stay motivated and keep your eye on trends they soon fall by the wayside. As far as making a good full time wage from the Internet it has been proven that it can be done, but it doesn’t happen overnight and it isn’t a large fraction of the people that try and with the recession we’re now in people are being more conservative with their spending habits.

Many people have found ways to make extra income with AdSense, affiliate marketing, writing articles, selling e-books, writing reviews and selling advertising space, but unless you’re a real go getter I don’t think you’ll be able to quit your day job. Although I have seen some people that do paid reviews make some really good money, but at what cost to the actual readership of their blog and page rank?

People have made money by writing reports that tell you how to make money and some claim you can make money without putting out any of your own money except for the money you put out for their report of course. Now didn’t that just sound stupid and ridiculous? You would be surprised how many people still fall for that especially new people eager to earn money online. Some people have had luck with MLM programs, but it’s usually the people that start them.

Many people earn online through Elance and if I were a great writer or knew how to program or design I would definitely check into these types of bid sites. A few that you might want to check for yourself would be GetAFreelancer, Ifreelance or Guru to name a few to get you started. Many people just starting online may not know about these resources so it might be a way to get your foot in the door. I have read good reports from contractors an bad ones.

Money can be made online through several different channels it just depends on what your talents are and how hard you’re prepared to work. Many people simply seem to have the know how or knack for making money regardless of what they do unfortunately I am not among them because I’m not very ambitious and as you can see from some of my past posts there are many programs that haven’t worked for me. So whatever approach you take for making extra income I wish you all the best.
